The massive earth works and road closures required in the construction of Elizabeth Quay meant a rough few years for Barrack Square. Now the Quay is open to the public and the whole area has been revitalised. The Bell Tower stands at the heart of a new plaza featuring sculptures, greenery and fountains. On WA Day, Monday 6 June the Bell Tower is having an Open Day with free entry all day. This will be a great opportunity to experience bell ringing, see the historic bells including the oldest bell in Australia (450-years), and the amazing bell and timepiece exhibitions.
The Bell Tower was built to house 12 bells from St Martins in the Field which were given to Perth to commemorate Australia's bicentenary in 1988. These bells were recorded as being in existence from before the 14th century. They were recast in the 16th century and again between 1725 and 1770.
The Bell Tower accommodates and provides for the needs of a wide variety of visitors and is designed to ensure visitors with physical disabilities are able to have full access to the area.
