Your library membership may not have had much of a work out recently, but there's a compelling reason to start using it again — a new online streaming service. Kanopy, which specialises in indie and arthouse films and documentaries, has launched in Australia and it's offering over 30,000 films and documentaries for free. To access it you just need to be a member at your local public library.
While not all Australian public libraries have yet jumped on board, all six of the City of Melbourne's libraries recently signed up, as well the five located in the Yarra City Council and in the Maribyrnong City Council area. In Sydney, members of Randwick City Library and Sutherland Shire Council's eight libraries can currently use Kanopy, and Brisbane's are expected to follow suit soon. If you're a student, it's worth checking if you can access the service through your uni's library.
The service was launched in Perth in 2008, before moving to San Francisco and offering its online archive to students at hundreds of universities. Lucky for us, it decided to expand — offering access to public library members across the United States and Australia.

If you're not already a member of your local library, now might be a good time to sign up.
