Real vs Inflated “Was” Prices
Australia’s consumer regulator, the ACCC, has repeatedly warned retailers (both Amazon sellers and traditional retailers) that quoting an inflated reference price next to a “sale” price can mislead shoppers. The product may never have actually sold widely at the higher price. The result: a sticker that says “-60%” on a product that’s really only 10–15% off its typical market price.
Red Flags
- Brand you’ve never heard of selling a generic gadget at “80% off”
- RRP listed at 3–5x what comparable products sell for elsewhere
- Product has only a few reviews, mostly five-star, all in similar broken English
- Sold by a third party (not “Ships from and sold by Amazon AU”) and the seller has a generic name
Genuine Discount Signals
- Recognised brand with a known typical price point
- Price history shows the product has been at a stable higher price for months
- Same item is currently cheaper than other major Australian retailers
- “Ships from and sold by Amazon AU” or a major brand’s official store

The Different Types of Amazon Deals
Amazon runs several distinct deal mechanics in parallel. Knowing the difference helps you decide whether to buy now or wait:
Lightning Deals
Short-window promotions on a limited quantity of stock. A countdown timer ticks down and a “claimed” bar shows how much has gone. They typically run for a few hours or until stock sells out. If the deal is good and the product is mainstream, expect it to sell out fast.
Deal of the Day
Featured 24-hour promotions, usually on bigger-ticket items. Less likely to sell out than Lightning Deals, but the discount window is fixed.
Amazon Warehouse Deals
Returned, open-box, or lightly used items inspected and resold at a discount, with a condition grade (“Like New”, “Very Good”, “Good”, “Acceptable”). For electronics and homewares this is one of the best ways to get genuine 30–60% off and items still come with Amazon’s standard returns policy.
Coupon Clip-to-Save
Some products show a green “Apply [X]% coupon” box near the price. You have to click the checkbox before adding to cart for the discount to apply at checkout. Easy to miss — always scan the product page carefully.
Subscribe & Save
Recurring deliveries (typically every 1, 2, 3 or 6 months) on grocery, pharmacy and pet products at a small discount — usually around 5%, sometimes more when you have multiple subscriptions in one delivery. You can cancel any time, including after one delivery. Useful for predictable household items.
Prime-Exclusive Deals
Some discounts are only visible (or only redeemable) if you’re an Amazon Prime member. Prime is a paid subscription that bundles free fast shipping, Prime Video, and member-only deals. Whether it pays for itself depends on how often you order — do the maths on shipping costs before committing.

Prime Day (mid-year)
Amazon’s flagship sale event, usually held in July. The deepest discounts are typically on Amazon-owned devices (Kindle, Echo, Fire), but cross-category deals are extensive. Many require an active Prime membership to access.
Black Friday & Cyber Monday
